Report: £128m 'superstar' who Liverpool were linked with now staying at current club this summer

Liverpool are set to miss out on a transfer target they’ve been linked with over the last few weeks, according to a recent report.

Jurgen Klopp bid farewell on the weekend, ending a marvellous eight-and-a-half-year spell at the football club.

Now, Arne Slot will take the reigns at Anfield and will already be plotting his transfer business ahead of the fast-approaching window.

That said, it has just emerged that one of his rumoured targets appears to be staying at his current club for at least another season.

Liverpool set to miss out on Florian Wirtz

Liverpool are set to miss out on the signing of Bayer Leverkusen’s ‘superstar’ Florian Writz, who will stay at the Bundesliga club next season, according to Relevo.

It had previously been claimed that they were interested in Wirtz, along with fellow Premier League outfit Chelsea and Manchester City.

The report further adds that Real Madrid will delay their interest until 2025, as they focus on sealing a deal for Kylian Mbappe.

Wirtz, who has a £128m price tag, enjoyed a marvellous season for the German champions, netting 18 times whilst laying on a staggering 20 assists.

Having only turned 21 this month, it’s pretty evident he’ll be one of the best players on the continent for the next decade but perhaps not with Liverpool.

The Merseysiders would have to break their transfer record by some distance to land his signature, which doesn’t seem feasible at this stage.

Liverpool should focus on other targets

With Wirtz now set to stay in Germany for at least another season, Liverpool should quickly turn their attention elsewhere.

They’ll have to operate in a cheaper market this summer and should consider the likes of Michael Olise or Pedro Neto, who although play slightly different roles, are still playmakers.

A telling window awaits Slot and his chiefs.
