'Not good enough': Jamie Carragher claims Arsenal seriously need to improve two areas of their squad

Jamie Carragher has now claimed that Arsenal have two obvious areas of their squad that they need to improve to win the title next season.

Mikel Arteta and his team came incredibly close this campaign, pushing Pep Guardiola’s winning-machine the whole way.

And if Arsenal lost the title-race owing to their inexperience last season, that wasn’t necessarily the case this time around.

Arteta’s team have matured, despite what Manchester City’s Rodri may say, they do now have the mentality to get over the line.

However, they ultimately succumbed to the smallest of margins up against City, perhaps still lamenting the result against Aston Villa on the back of a European excursion.

That being said, one straightforward way for Arsenal to improve will be making further additions in the transfer market, hoping to repeat the success of both Declan Rice and Kai Havertz.

And with that in mind, Jamie Carragher has now been outlining where he would improve this squad on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast.

Jamie Carragher claims Arsenal definitely need a new left-back and left-winger this summer

Speaking on the podcast, Carragher listened to talk of Arsenal needing a new striker, but thought funds could be better spent elsewhere.

He explained: “I think sometimes when you have a good team, and we were like that at Liverpool, where we couldn’t quite get there in terms of the league.

“You need players who go in your first 11, and then the ones who are in your 11 become your squad players.

“So Arsenal are saying we need cover for this one and that one. You need to go and buy a left-back. Left-back is not good enough. And I think left-wing is not quite good enough.

“I like Martinelli and Trossard. People keep saying Arsenal need a striker, but there’s not many strikers in the world, everybody in the premier League beside Man City are not happy with their striker really.

“So it might not be a striker, for me when I look at Arsenal they are missing a top attacker to go with Saka, who I think is fantastic.

“They need another one, whether that’s through the middle or off the left.”

Is Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams the man to replace Leandro Trossard?

Given the final few months of the season he enjoyed, it seems odd to suggest that Arsenal may need to replace Leandro Trossard.

But Jamie Carragher is right to a degree, Arsenal’s left-wing isn’t quite up to the standards set by Bukayo Saka on the right.

Gabriel Martinelli isn’t going to be sold, a superb prospect who should be forgiven for enduring a slight dip.

But at 29-years-old, could Trossard be the one to go?

It would be a tough call, but perhaps one that Pep Guardiola wouldn’t be scared to make at Arsenal’s rivals.

Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams remains an excellent option, especially given his very reasonable release clause.

And in terms of left-back, Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde still looks like the perfect addition – a signing that would signal real ambition at Arsenal.

All that being said, Arsenal do actually believe they could achieve one deal for a cut-price this summer.
