'I hope': Gary Lineker has one thing he really wants Arne Slot to do in his first season at Liverpool

Liverpool are set for major changes next season after the exit of Jurgen Klopp and many of his coaching staff.

Incoming boss Arne Slot will have plenty of big decisions to make upon his arrival at Anfield, including who he can rely on and which players must be moved on.

And one player that looks certain to continue his starring role in the side is Trent Alexander-Arnold, a firm favourite under Klopp.

But where Slot chooses to play the 25-year-old remains to be seen, with the academy graduate largely playing in his familiar right-back role in recent seasons.

He has, however, also ventured into central midfield in an inverted full-back role for his club, and has operated in a much more traditional midfield role for England.

Gary Lineker wants Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool midfield

The Liverpool star has been named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional Three Lions squad for Euro 2024 alongside teammates Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah.

But unlike Gomez and Quansah, Alexander-Arnold has been named as a midfielder alongside Jones. And that is the role that former England striker Lineker wants to see Alexander-Arnold operate under Slot next season.

“He’s still playing right-back for Liverpool,” Lineker said on The Rest Is Football Podcast.

“Occasionally he has played in midfield, but it’s kind of the inverted full-back role, he goes and does what he wants.

“I hope the new manager when he comes in plays Trent in midfield at Liverpool. I think that’s his position, I really do, I always have. It would be lovely to see him play there regularly.”

Arne Slot could be tempted into Alexander-Arnold position change

Slot will have a lot of tough decisions regarding his starting XI at Liverpool, with the new season certain to be a fresh start for many players.

Alexander-Arnold has very little to do to impress the Anfield faithful, but they could see the player in a whole new light if he was pushed further forward.

And it is a switch that Slot could very easily make, with Liverpool having a ready-made replacement at right-back in Conor Bradley.

The young Northern Ireland international has proven time and again in his brief Reds career that he is more than capable of shining at both ends of the pitch.
