Japanese, Thai foreign ministers vow to boost bilateral business ties

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and her Thai counterpart Maris Sangiampongsa agreed Wednesday that the two nations will strengthen bilateral business ties and work together in other fields, the Foreign Ministry said.

During their talks in Tokyo, Kamikawa was quoted by her ministry as telling Maris that Japan hopes to speed up negotiations toward an early conclusion of a bilateral social security deal aimed at improving business conditions for those moving between Japan and Thailand.

The deal is intended to aggregate the social security coverage for individuals who live or work between both countries, meaning they would not have to make dual contribution payments.

Kamikawa also told Maris, who took up the position in a Cabinet reshuffle earlier this year by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, that Japan will work closely with Thailand to further promote people-to-people exchanges, the ministry said.

The two ministers also discussed the situation in junta-controlled Myanmar since the coup in 2021, as well as the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, according to the ministry.
