Report: Man Utd wonderkid expected to request new contract this summer, it depends on one thing

Alejandro Garnacho has quickly become one of the key figures at Manchester United and now he could request a brand new contract.

Manchester United have been heavily reliant on young players during the 2023-24 season with it being arguable that Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho were two of only a handful who could hold their heads high.

Neither would’ve entered this season expecting to play such a massive amount of minutes, but with their senior teammates struggling, the teenage duo became mainstays in Erik ten Hag‘s starting XI.

With Mainoo already in line for a new long-term contract over the summer, with an agreement being hoped for before the Euros begin next month, now Garnacho is said to be keen on extending his contract but is waiting on one thing.

Alejandro Garnacho might want to improve his Manchester United contract

Having only signed a lucrative £50k-a-week contract at the end of last season, already Garnacho’s importance to Ten Hag’s side has trebled and he feels he could be in line for a raise.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Garnacho may be looking for a new contract this summer, however, it’s thought he will base this request on whether he features prominently for Argentina in the Copa America this summer.

The thinking is that if he can cement his place in the Argentina squad as he did at Old Trafford this season, he could end up with a new contract soon, with his representatives sure to be knocking on the door.

It would also be logical to think he’ll look at what Mainoo’s contract looks like before making any request and with four years remaining on his deal from last April, United won’t be in any rush to enter talks.

Does Garnacho deserve a new contract at Old Trafford?

In terms of looking at where he was last season and this season, it wouldn’t be outrageous to suggest he deserves a new deal.

Signing his last contract while a rotational player, Garnacho has improved by leaps and bounds to make the joint most appearances for United by an outfield player this season – joint with Diogo Dalot.

He’s made both the left and right wing his own during the course of the season, displacing both Marcus Rashford and Antony at various stages.

He’s a player who seems pretty firmly locked into the starting line-up ahead of a summer where few will be guaranteed of their future.

Together with Mainoo, the future of United looks bright and getting Garnacho on a new contract is something that’s hard to oppose, assuming it’s incentive-based.
