Modder gets Windows XP running on an ancient computer from 1989

When Windows XP launched on August 24, 2001, the official system requirements included a computer with a Pentium processor of at least 233MHz, 64MB of working memory, and 1.5 GB of storage space.

Now, however, Techspot reports that a German modder calling himself “Dietmar” has managed to get Windows XP Professional SP 3 working on an old computer from 1989 with an Intel 486 processor at 90MHz.

Not only that, but he also made the ISO file of the modded Windows XP available to download on the Internet Archive. If you have an old Intel 486 computer, you can try it out for yourself!

Note: Don’t expect a smooth or safe process. You’ll likely have to hunt down drivers on your own, and there will certainly be unpatched vulnerabilities in the now-retired operating system.
