'You never know': Released Wrexham player hails Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, can't rule out return

Wrexham have already made some difficult decisions for the summer transfer window having secured promotion to League One.

Phil Parkinson has guided Wrexham into League One having secured back-to-back promotions in some style.

Wrexham have reached the third tier possibly quicker than anyone really expected and the rapid rise means difficult decisions must be made.

Wrexham released a retained list earlier this month, confirming that some experienced players will be leaving the club this summer.

Rob Lainton, Jordan Tunnicliffe, Callum McFadzean and Luke Young are all moving on after playing their part in the Wrexham story.

Defender Aaron Hayden has already moved on, completing a return to former club Carlisle United this week.

Ben Tozer let go by Wrexham

Another key name to move on was Ben Tozer.

The veteran defender joined Wrexham from Cheltenham Town back in 2021, dropping down two divisions to make the move to the STōK Cae Ras.

Tozer was a leader at Cheltenham and he took on a similar role at Wrexham, serving as vice-captain behind skipper Young.

Tozer racked up more than 130 appearances for Wrexham, played his part in two promotions and offered a major threat thanks to his long throw ability.

Named as Wrexham’s most underrated player by boss Parkinson, Tozer found himself out of the team come the end of the season and a departure made sense for all.

Tozer is now looking for a new club at the age of 34, but a return to Wrexham one day can’t be ruled out.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds praised by Tozer

Tozer has told Goal that he had ‘really good chats’ with both Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds before leaving Wrexham.

The club’s co-chairmen made the effort to speak to Tozer about his departure and the defender admitted that the relationship between him and the club is still strong.

Tozer suggested ‘you never know’ regarding a potential return to Wrexham as a coach one day but certainly loved the personal touch from McElhenney and Reynolds.

“I have had a couple of really good chats with both of them,” said Tozer. “They have both took the time out to make the effort to speak to me which was nice.”

“You never know what could happen in the future with the relationship we have and stuff but it is great the way they have dealt with it and dealt with me, and dealt with everyone really,” he added.

Tozer could certainly still play an important role for a National League or League Two side and we are sure that he won’t be short of offers this summer.

The 6ft 3in centre back doesn’t seem ready to call time on his playing career just yet and he may well be bringing those long throws to another club very soon.

Whenever Tozer does decide to hang up his boots, he will absolutely be welcome back at Wrexham – whether it’s just as a fan or in more fo a coaching role.
