German far-right AfD candidate withdraws from EU election campaign

The number two on the far-right Alternative for Germany's (AfD) list for the European election, Peter Bystron, will no longer be campaigning for the time being.

When asked on Wednesday, Bystron referred to family reasons. "My closest family members have once again been the victims of a house search and media harassment," Bystron told dpa.

"Anyone who doesn't understand that I have to look after them first has no heart."

Bystron is currently under investigation for money laundering and bribery. His Berlin home was searched on Tuesday.

Bystron's announcement came several days after AfD chairpersons Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla had asked him to refrain from making any further appearances in the European election campaign until the allegations against him had been clarified.

The AfD's lead candidate for the EU election on June 9, Maximilian Krah, was banned from making public appearances on Wednesday following his comments that not all SS officers were criminals and a dispute with the French far-right National Rally.

Both candidates have been in the headlines for weeks due to possible links to pro-Russian networks.
