Florida defensive lineman Michai Boireau spent two nights in the Monroe County Jail after being charged with charged with fleeing and causing serious injury with his vehicle.
The news was first reported by Steve Reece of the Monroe County Reporter. GatorsOnline has confirmed that Boireau was arrested and is now back in Gainesville.
The newspaper reports Boireau was jailed on Saturday night for hitting another driver while fleeing Monroe County deputies at 150 mph, according to the sheriff’s report. He was also charged with marijuana possession.
Florida coach Billy Napier is aware of the situation, a team spokesman told GatorsOnline. Boireau was released on Monday on a $60,000 bond, according to the report.
The 6-foot-5, 382-pound freshman is a nose tackle for the Gators and played at Creekside High in Atlanta. Boireau chose Florida over Georgia last June, although he backed off his pledge in September before recommitting to UF on Dec. 2.
Here’s what happened according to the sheriff’s report obtained by the Monroe County Reporter:
“Michai Ishmael Boireau, 18, of Atlanta, was clocked by Cpl. Larry Sullivan doing 86 mph in his black 2018 BMW on I-75 just north of town around 10 p.m. As Sullivan pulled out to make a stop, Boireau turned off his lights and sped up to over 150 mph.
Boireau drove recklessly, radically changing lanes and driving through traffic at speeds of more than 100 mph, passing vehicles on the shoulder. Boireau entered the rest area near mile marker 178, drove through the rest area, and nearly stopped at the exit before quickly accelerating and entering back onto the interstate.
As Sullivan went around the curve at mile marker 176, he briefly lost sight of Boireau. When the corporal came out of the curve, he saw a wrecked Chevrolet Malibu in the median. Sullivan stopped and ran to the Malibu, which was heavily damaged in the rear. The driver, Derrick Thompson, 58, of College Park, was injured, and Sullivan summoned EMS. Sullivan was returning to his patrol car when he saw Boireau’s BMW with Boireau walking on the shoulder. Deputy John Bogdan and Sgt. Wade Kendrick arrived, and Boireau was ordered to the ground. He was then secured in Bogdan’s patrol car.
Boireau told deputies he was traveling back to school in Florida and that he fled because his license was suspended. A colored plastic bag containing marijuana was found inside the BMW, and Boireau admitted ownership. He consented to a blood test, and EMS completed a blood draw at the Monroe County Jail.
Boireau was charged with fleeing, serious injury by vehicle, and possession of marijuana less than one ounce. He also received multiple traffic citations, including DUI-drugs.
Thompson was taken by ambulance to the hospital by Monroe County EMS with a possible head injury.”
