Barcelona now miss out on possible Xavi replacement as former star agrees Juventus role

Barcelona’s managerial situation is currently so complicated that there is confusion over whether Xavi Hernandez will stay in his role or leave.

Xavi announced his intention to step down, but reversed this and looked set to stay for next season.

However, his comments about the financial situation at Barcelona did not go down with President Joan Laporta, and this reportedly meant Xavi was in danger again.

Should Xavi end up leaving, Barcelona have a range of candidates to pick from, including Roberto De Zerbi and Rafa Marquez, but another former player could also have been available.

Barcelona miss out on Thiago Motta as he agrees to join Juventus

Former Barcelona midfielder Thiago Motta enjoyed a highly successful playing career before moving into management in 2019.

He has just achieved a historic feat as he has taken Bologna back to the Champions League for the first time since 1964-95.

Motta made 139 appearances for Barcelona as a player, and with his former side now struggling, the Italian could have been a surprise successor for the midfield legend.

However, it now appears that he has agreed to join Juventus, which will end any Barcelona interest in him for now.

Motta’s move to Juventus will either put him in good stead for other top jobs, or it will damage his reputation.

If he can cope with the step up to Juventus, then it may only be a matter of time until Barcelona are sniffing around him again, and this time, he would arrive at the Camp Nou as an experienced coach rather than a relative novice.

Motta’s Bologna side plays a counter-pressing system, which has helped their forwards such as Joshua Zirkzee deliver a strong campaign.
