3 Man City players Vincent Kompany could target for Bayern Munich, including £175k-a-week ace - opinion

It has been widely reported that former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is set to be named the new manager of Bayern Munich in the coming days.

The Etihad legend has just suffered relegation with Burnley, after his style of football unfortunately didn’t translate to the Premier League.

Despite this big setback, Kompany has now emerged as a top contender for the Bayern job, with Thomas Tuchel leaving. The Bavarian giants have been searching for a replacement for a while now, and they seem to have settled on the Belgian.

The move has come as a real surprise to fans given the disappointing campaign he has just overseen at Burnley.

But Bayern are seemingly willing to take a chance, and Kompany should be announced as their new head coach in the coming days according to Fabrizio Romano.

And perhaps he will fancy raiding his old club for new players. Here are three City stars he might come calling for…

It would be no surprise if Stefan Ortega was the first person Kompany came calling for this summer.

At the moment the German’s future is up in the air, as he wants to be a number one after a string of top performances for City when Ederson hasn’t played.

City want to tie Ortega down to a new deal, but talks have stalled and Kompany may look to try and lure the 31-year-old to the Allianz Arena. Ortega has been linked with a move to Bayern previously, and it would certainly make sense for him to go there.

Manuel Neuer is 38 and heading into his final year at the club, and Bayern need a long-term replacement.

Kyle Walker

It was recently reported that Bayern Munich were ready to reignite their previous interest in Kyle Walker ahead of this summer, and Kompany becoming manager of the German giants could potentially turn the current City captain’s head.

£175,000-a-week ace Walker, 33, signed a new deal with City last summer, after snubbing Bayern.

At the moment it is highly unlikely that he’ll leave the club, but perhaps Kompany’s presence at Bayern would change the picture.

Walker played alongside Kompany at City and obviously has a huge amount of respect for his former teammate.

He remains very important to City and is completely unique with that amazing recovery pace he has. But maybe Kompany will try to test his former club’s resolve with a cheeky bid this summer.

Joao Cancelo

Joao Cancelo is returning to Manchester City after his loan spell with Barcelona, but he is highly unlikely to stay at the Etihad.

It has been reported the club want to sell this summer. The player has been hopeful of a permanent move to Barca, but who knows if they will actually have the cash to do a deal – their financial problems have been well-documented for some time.

Cancelo obviously went on loan to Bayern for the second half of 2022/23, and it’s possible the German giants may fancy having him back.

The Portugal international never played with Kompany at City, having joined after the Belgian left. But perhaps Kompany will see about bringing the full-back to the Allianz. It is thought Alphonso Davies will be joining Real Madrid this summer, and Joshua Kimmich could also be leaving.

As we know, Cancelo is capable of playing on both sides of the pitch, so it may not be out of the question that he heads back to Germany.
