The one thing that’ll take Arsenal ‘much, much, much’ closer to beating Man City to title

Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has now told Mikel Arteta what he must do this summer to take the club closer to winning the title.

Arsenal came agonisingly close to claiming their first Premier League title triumph since 2004 this season.

The Gunners were able to take the title race right down to the wire, but although Mikel Arteta’s side beat Everton at the Emirates Stadium on the final day of the campaign, Manchester City’s win over West Ham United meant that they retained their crown for a fourth successive season.

Arteta will now go back to the drawing board over the course of the upcoming summer transfer window. The Spanish coach will need to clear space in his squad for new arrivals. There are a number of players who may well leave Arsenal this summer. Arteta will then seek to add some new faces to his ranks.

Cesc Fabregas urges Mikel Arteta to add firepower to Arsenal squad

Speaking on the Planet Premier League podcast, the Spaniard said: “In my opinion – and he’s done really, really well but obviously it’s not his main position – Havertz, he’s had a fantastic season, but if Arsenal can manage to get a top, top striker that can guarantee you 30 goals a season, then they will be much, much, much closer to getting it [the title].”

In the second half of the season, Kai Havertz impressed Arsenal fans with his efforts in leading the line. The German chipped in with a number of important goals and really found his feet at the top end of the pitch for the Gunners.

However, Gabriel Jesus endured a torrid campaign in front of goal, netting just four times in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Eddie Nketiah has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium and is clearly no longer in the manager’s plans.

Arsenal have issues to address beyond a striker signing

Arsenal have been linked with a host of strikers. Newcastle United ace Alexander Isak is thought to be admired by Arteta. Arsenal are also mooted to be in the hunt for Benjamin Sesko’s signature.

Undeniably, an elite-level striker would be an exciting addition to Arteta’s squad. However, there is an argument that a more pressing need exists for reinforcements to be brought in in the middle of the park. Jorginho and Thomas Partey are both in the twilight years of their careers and more support is needed for Declan Rice.

In truth, multiple additions are needed to take Arsenal to the next level. There is no single problem position preventing the Gunners from winning the title.
