Residents are being encouraged to be a council’s “eyes and ears” to report incidents, after offensive graffiti was painted at a park.
A recent incident of graphic inappropriate graffiti at Sherwood Avenue Park is under investigation by Newark and Sherwood District Council and their partners from the police.
The vandalism, branded as “selfish”, occurred earlier this week and was discovered by the council’s Street Scene Team on Tuesday (May 21) morning.
The team worked quickly to remove the graffiti — and residents are being encouraged to continue reporting incidents of offensive, abusive or racist graffiti on the council’s website.
Paul Taylor, portfolio holder for public protection and community relations at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “It is unacceptable that there are still selfish individuals out there who think they can vandalise and disrespect our community spaces, and we will not stand for it. The graffiti discovered by our Street Scene Team at Sherwood Avenue Park was extremely inappropriate and offensive and we are working with our partners from the Police to identify those responsible and contacting local schools and colleges to help us in our investigation.
“We have invested a great deal in our local parks and green spaces, with funding of £350,000 to improve ten play parks across the district and our on-going plans to transform Sherwood Avenue Park itself. Not only is money being invested, but also the time and effort of so many, from our officers and park rangers to volunteers and local community groups, and it is extremely disappointing that there are those who think they are above not just the law but also common decency.
“As always, I encourage our residents to be our eyes and ears and reporting any incidents such as this. We must come together as a community to stop this destructive behaviour and create a district that residents can be proud to be part of.”
