'Legend' from beloved rock band dies suddenly after freak accident - 'The sweetest guy'

Charlie Colin, a founding member of the American pop-rock band Train, has sadly died at the age of 58 as the group offers tribute.

Some songs immediately bring to mind the joys of unwinding in the summer, the sun on your face with a light breeze keeping you feeling blessed. More than a handful of tracks from the US pop-rock band Train have soundtracked moments like that, whether it’s their biggest hit Hey, Soul Sister, or the likes of Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me) and Drive By. The group continues to release music, but sadly, one of its founding members, Charlie Colin has passed on.

Charlie Colin of the band Train has died

Charlie, one of the original members of Train and its bass guitarist, passed away at the age of 58, announced on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

TMZ reports his mother told them he died after slipping in the shower while house-sitting for a friend in Belgium. Other members of the family have made reports regarding his death, although the specific cause is yet to be disclosed.

The band was formed in 1993 by singer Pat Monahan, and Chris was recruited for the original line-up, playing with them for a decade, as he later revealed he technically left the band in 2005.

He was the bassist on their best-known album, 2001’s Drops Of Jupiter, which served as their sophomore effort after the 1998 self-titled debut.

“When I met Charlie Colin, front left, I fell in love with him,” a statement from the group’s official Instagram pays tribute.

“He was THE sweetest guy and what a handsome chap. Let’s make a band, that’s the only reasonable thing to do. His unique bass playing and beautiful guitar work helped get folks to notice us in SF and beyond. I’ll always have a warm place for him in my heart. I always tried to pull him closer, but he had a vision of his own.”

Ending on an even more emotional note, the post concludes: “You’re a legend, Charlie. Go charm the pants off those angels.”

Tributes and stories shared in honor of Charlie Colin

The band’s tribute has served as a platform for fans to pay their respects to the beloved musical figure.

His artistry, on the other hand, extends far beyond the music. “This breaks my heart,” one mourner began, sharing their story. “The first time I met Charlie was pre-Train in Hollywood. We were standing in front of a beautiful painting. I was telling him how I could actually feel the painting. Then he told me he had painted it! He was so kind and a true artist in many ways.”

Another reacted: “Sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of meeting him and [he] kindly took a photo with me. I had that photo on my wall for years.”

“RIP Charlie,” one also wrote. “You helped make my childhood great. I know you’re charming angels with your guitar and vocals now.”

Another shared their “condolences to his family and those who knew and loved him! Truly a talented person.”

Perhaps the most beautifully put, a fan said: “The great rock band in the sky will be better, but the world a poorer place.” May he rest easy, and thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.
