'My favourite': Matheus Cunha names his best Wolves goal of 2023/24, and it's not v Nottingham Forest

Matheus Cunha has revealed what was his favourite goal he scored for Wolves in the 2023/24 season -and he actually overlooked his sensational effort against Nottingham Forest.

Cunha enjoyed a really good campaign for Wanderers in his first full season with the club.

The Brazilian was one of the most important players for Gary O’Neil, and finished the season with 22 goal involvements to his name.

The star had struggled a bit under Julen Lopetegui last term, after arriving at Molineux in a £44 million mid-season deal from Atletico Madrid.

But in 2023/24 he went to a completely new level under O’Neil, and regularly stood out in games.

He finished the campaign with 13 goals to his name and the star has now selected his favourite – but it is surprisingly not the amazing goal he scored against Nottingham Forest…

The Cunha catalogue made for great viewing in 2023/24, with the Brazilian scoring some fantastic goals in old gold.

The 24-year-old was found wanting in front of goal last season, but under O’Neil he has been much more effective, and his finishing seems to have improved a lot.

He scored some great goals and arguably, his finest came against Nottingham Forest in the 2-2 draw at the City Ground in April.

Cunha scored both of Wolves’ goals that day, and his first was a truly outstanding effort, as he collected the ball in his own half, took it all the way to the side of the Forest box before turning inside two defenders and shooting into the far corner.

It was a goal several of his teammates thought was the best of the season for Wolves.

But that effort was actually not his favourite in the 2023/24. He told the club’s official website: “My favourite goal was the West Bromwich one, the atmosphere around everything. Then the moments together as a team, we remember the games and the goals.”

What a moment

It is understandable that Cunha chose his goal against West Brom as his favourite.

The star breached the offside trap after a lofted ball through from Max Kilman, and finished brilliantly underneath goalkeeper Josh Griffiths.

The goal was great, and the celebration was absolutely iconic as Cunha gestured to show that The Hawthorns belonged to him.

It wasn’t as good a goal as his solo effort against Forest. But given it effectively knocked bitter rivals West Brom out of the FA Cup, it is little surprise that it’s his favourite.
