Report: Newcastle have genuine interest in 'complete striker', they think he'll be much better under Howe

If Newcastle United are going to get rid of Callum Wilson, they will need to sign a replacement.

Rumours currently suggest that Callum Wilson will be leaving St James’ Park this summer, despite Eddie Howe making it very clear that he wants to keep the 32-year-old at the club.

However, it makes business sense to let him go given his age and contract situation, and it looks like common sense is going to prevail.

That will leave Newcastle United with just one senior striker – Alexander Isak. The Magpies will need to bring someone else in, with Benjamin Sesko one name who has been linked. Geordie Boot Boys have also been told that Tammy Abraham has been offered to Newcastle, as he eyes up a return to England.

Now a new report has provided details of another possible option for Eddie Howe, and it perhaps is not one that will massively excite Toon fans.

Newcastle United to reignite interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin

According to the Telegraph, it is Newcastle United’s priority to sign a winger this summer, but they will also be looking for a striker if Callum Wilson departs.

And they report that one player the Magpies are interested in replacing him with is Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 27-year-old has endured a tough few years at Goodison Park, netting just 15 goals in all competitions across his last three seasons on Merseyside.

That is a poor tally, but the Telegraph state that Newcastle believe they can get a lot more out of Calvert-Lewin and are convinced that he will score more goals under the guidance of Eddie Howe.

Calvert-Lewin would be a great signing for Newcastle if he can roll back the years

Recent history dictates that Calvert-Lewin would not be a great addition to Howe’s squad.

He scored seven Premier League goals this season, while the year before he only managed two in the league. On top of that, he has also had problems with injury.

Those stats do not make for great reading, nor does the number of games missed. If Newcastle are to replace the injury prone Wilson, they need someone who they can rely on to stay fit.

There will be fears that Calvert-Lewin cannot be trusted to avoid injury, and his fitness record was actually one of the reasons Newcastle opted against signing him back in 2022 when he was a major target.

But Calvert-Lewin has proven in the past what a great striker he can be when he is fully fit and playing under a manager who believes in him. Carlo Ancelotti got the best out of him, with Calvert-Lewin scoring 21 times in all competitions during the Italian manager’s one and only season at Goodison Park.

Ancelotti was a massive fan of Calvert-Lewin, and even described him as the ‘complete striker‘.

He has rarely lived up to that title since Ancelotti’s departure, but perhaps Howe has the tools to bring him back to his former glories.

The England international is the ideal profile to act as backup to Isak, given the fact that his reputation has dipped and Newcastle have kicked on so much as a club. The chance to be Newcastle’s second choice striker would probably be a good opportunity for Calvert-Lewin, and one you have to imagine he would be keen to take if it comes his way.

However, there will be a lot of doubts from Newcastle fans if the club do decide to make a move.
