Acerbi and Fagioli in Italian Euro squad

Title holders Italy have announced a 30-strong provisional squad for Euro 2024 which includes Francesco Acerbi who missed the last matches in March over racism allegations, and Nicolo Fagioli who has returned from a betting violations ban.

Acerbi from Serie A champions Inter Milan left the squad ahead of March friendlies after being accused by Napoli player Juan Jesus of racial abuse during a match.

Acerbi was later cleared by a sports court due to lack of evidence, and now returns into the Euro squad announced on Thursday by coach Luciano Spalletti.

Juventus midfielder Fagioli was banned in October and underwent mandatory treatment for a gambling addiction.

The squad is led by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and forward Federico Chiesa, includes a newcomer in Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori but there was no place for Ciro Immobile and 2021 winner Manuel Locatelli.

Italy start their preparations on May 31 at the national training centre in Florence and play tune-up games against Turkey on June 4 and Bosnia-Herzegovina five days later.

Spalletti must announce his final Euro squad of 26 by June 7, and Italy travel to the host country of Germany on June 10. Spain, Croatia and Albania are their group stage opponents at the month-long tournament starting on June 14.
