Report: Erik ten Hag's first academy debutant at Manchester United set to leave Old Trafford, he's in demand

Manchester United have allowed a number of young players to leave the club over the last year and one more appears destined for the exit.

United’s incoming business was the main focus last summer as Erik ten Hag was backed with signings like Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

Those signings have had mixed fortunes so far and United will be desperate to land quality additions this summer.

One factor which may have been overlooked from last summer’s window is the exodus of young talents.

Nathan Bishop, Matej Kovar, Zidane Iqbal, Teden Mengi and Charlie Savage were just some of the names United allowed to leave permanently.

Even in January, United allowed Mateo Mejia and Isak Hansen-Aaroen to leave.

United seem willing to offload youngsters right now and one more is moving on this summer.

Charlie McNeill primed for Manchester United exit

United appeared to have landed something of a coup in 2020, snatching Charlie McNeill away from rivals Manchester City.

McNeill was highly regarded in the City ranks but chose to leave for United in a fairly hefty £750,000 move.

Swapping City for United is always going to attract attention and McNeill certainly lived up to the billing in the Under-18’s.

34 goals and 11 assists in 35 games is an incredible record but the goals haven’t flowed as freely in the Under-21’s, scoring 12 times in 47 games.

Loan spells with Newport County and Stevenage have been valuable for McNeill’s development but haven’t brought the goals.

Turning 21 in September, McNeill now looks ready to depart Old Trafford.

Manchester World report that McNeill is ‘set to leave’ when his contract expires this summer.

United seemingly have no plans to extend McNeill’s stay and will allow him to depart as a free agent.

McNeill not short of interest

It’s added that McNeill has suitors elsewhere, meaning he is unlikely to spend much time without a club.

The report claims that Championship and even Premier League clubs are interested in signing McNeill.

Teams in Germany and Portugal are also keen with McNeill potentially able to try his luck abroad.

McNeill was the first academy player to be given a first-team debut under Erik ten Hag.

The striker came off the bench for a debut against Real Sociedad in September 2022, coming on for six minutes in a 1-0 defeat.

That remains McNeill’s only appearance in the United first team and it looks set to be his last with United ready to let him move on.
