The success Ole Miss has sustained under Lane Kiffin has been attributed to the potent play of the offense under the guidance of Charlie Weis, Jr.

Weis was hired in January 2022 as co-offensive coordinator by Kiffin and shared that title with former tight ends coach John David Baker. Baker was hired away by East Carolina last December to take over the Pirates offense.

Now Weis is the sole offensive coordinator of one of the top offenses in college football and is being compensated as such. He signed a new three-year contract after the 2023 season and this season’s salary makes Weis one of the top five highest-paid offensive coordinators in the country.

Weis will make $1.65 million in 2024 — a $150,000 raise with the new contract — placing him fifth among top offensive coordinator salaries in college football for this season according to a list put out by Pro Football Focus. He will make $1.75 million in 2025 and $1.85 million in 2026, according to a report released by the Clarion Ledger last month.

Notre Dame’s Mike Denbrook tops the list with a salary of $2.1 million followed by Ohio State’s Chip Kelly ($2 million), Utah’s Andy Ludwig ($1.8 million) and Clemson’s Garrett Riley ($1.7 million) before Weis rounds out the top five.

The new contract also makes Weis the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the Southeastern Conference. Arkansas’ Bobby Patrino and Missouri’s Kirby Moore are tied with the seventh highest salary at $1.5 million followed by Georgia’s Mike Bobo tied for ninth highest at $1.4 million with Nebraska’s Marcus Satterfield and Oregon’s Will Stein.

Weis is also the quarterbacks coach and will get a third season with senior Jaxson Dart at Ole Miss.

Dart announced in January he would be back for ‘The Last Dance.’ Weis noted the progress he has seen in his quarterback ahead of last December’s Peach Bowl.

“I think he just has an unbelievable mindset. His work ethic is top tier,” Weis said. “The decision-making I think is the biggest thing, just total understanding of the offense. He’s able to go out there, process things at a very high level, not only just what are we doing offensively? What’s the defense doing? Being able to get us in and out of checks and getting into good plays, whatever that may be, and just taking care of the football.

“I think that’s probably the biggest improvement from a year ago. He’s always been an explosive player. Now he’s explosive, and he takes care of the ball. Very fortunate to have one of the best quarterbacks in the country.”
