'They are confident': Newcastle now want to complete two signings in the next 48 hours - journalist

Newcastle United are ‘confident’ that they are on the brink of not one but two summer signings already.

The Premier League season only ended last weekend, yet Newcastle United are moving fast to secure the services of two of their top summer targets.

It has been clear for a couple of months that the Magpies need to address their centre-back options, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both possibly out for the rest of 2024 due to ACL injuries.

That has left Eddie Howe short of centre-back options, with Emil Krafth often having to slot in and provide cover. He has done well, but now Newcastle are on the brink of ensuring they will not have to rely on someone to play out of position.

The latest on Newcastle United signing Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo

Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo have been heavily linked with moves to St James’ Park, with both players due to be available on free transfers.

That is why they are so appealing to Newcastle United, and HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that the club are now ‘confident’ that they will both be signing contracts to join the Magpies very soon.

“As it stands, they are confident of signing both players,” he said.

“I’ve always said that I thought Lloyd Kelly was the guaranteed one, and it seems to be panning out that way.

“With Tosin, Manchester United are in the mix. From what I’m told, Newcastle want this done. It’s not quite a deadline, but I don’t think Newcastle want this going after the cup final. I don’t think they want to allow Man United the wiggle room to possibly do something.

“They want these deals done before the FA Cup final, especially Tosin.”

Newcastle right to act fast with Tosin

As Bailey says, the Kelly deal has looked likely for quite a while. He told Geordie Boot Boys that Newcastle were the favourites to sign the 25-year-old towards the end of April, and that is still the case one month on as Eddie Howe prepares to be reunited with a player he first signed in 2019.

The Tosin deal has been a bit more complicated, with Newcastle seeming to barge their way to the front of the queue in recent weeks.

The Fulham ace also has interest from Manchester United, but the Red Devils are unable to give him any assurances as they prepare to make a decision regarding Erik ten Hag’s future. Whether he stays or goes, that decision will not come until after the FA Cup final.

That is why Newcastle United are particularly keen to have that deal wrapped up before then. They are extremely keen to add Tosin to their squad, with Howe a big fan of how physical he is and his quality on the ball.

Those attributes make him an exciting option for Newcastle, while Kelly adds versatility due to the fact he can play at left-back as well as centre-back.

Newcastle are on the brink of getting two very talented players on frees, and are keen to move fast to ensure no one swoops in and pips them to the post.
