Italy’s very first McDonald’s leaves Americans wondering what happened to the state of their restaurants

Americans were shocked upon discovering the magnificent realm that is Italy’s first-ever McDonald’s, leading many to question why they “cannot have nice things Stateside.”

Since first opening the garden arches in 1940, McDonald’s has spread across the world into countless countries with their iconic burgers and unique seasonal releases. Though customers understood that food options differed greatly depending on what country you are in, they didn’t quite grasp the dramatic difference between decor choices.

Italy’s first McDonald’s is a ‘testament to beauty’

On March 20, 1986, the Golden Arches came to Italy for the first time just a few paces from the iconic Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Despite being founded decades ago, the Rome location is now gathering positive attention on social media.

In a clip shared on TikTok, Brianne Bartolini (@yourfriendinitaly) shared her experience with the Italian branch of McDonald’s.

“Who would have thought that a McDonald’s near the iconic Spanish Steps in Rome could hold so much charm? Join me as I uncover the surprising delights of this unique fast-food experience,” she wrote in the caption. “From the mouthwatering Italian-inspired menu options to the stylish decor that blends modernity with history, this McDonald’s is a testament to the beauty of cultural fusion.”

The interior of Italy’s first-ever McDonald’s is as you might expect. Where American branches usually have large exterior windows, the Italian branch opted for stone walkways, traditional sculptures, marble walls, and mosaics. There was even Roman writing for that authentic Italian feel.

The food itself is also quite the treat, but don’t worry, they still offer the usual foods McDonald’s is known for. Limited edition items are also country-dependent, so don’t expect to see the football-themed “Hat Trick” burger on the menu. Unique menu items include chicken wings, cheese fries, stuffed and deep-fried olives, mozzarella-filled Panzerotti, and even some beer options.

Italy’s first-ever McDonald’s has made such an impression that some are considering a trip to Italy over the summer.

On X, formally known as Twitter, where the video was shared, one person wrote: “They are ahead of their time.”

“Here they offer McFlurry’s that taste of grandma,” another person joked, while a third added, “I wanna go to the Italian McDonald’s so bad.”

Another person added: “Been there. It’s kinda subterranean and they sell beer (or did 20-something years ago).”
