Trisha Ford on if the selection committee forced a matchup with Texas: ‘That’s between us and the team’

Texas A&M was a part of a loaded SEC this season. Every single team from the conference made the NCAA Tournament and another seven have advanced to the Super Regionals. The Aggies were given the No. 16 overall seed and now travel to Austin to face off against in-state Texas for a spot in the Women’s College World Series.

With the solid resume Texas A&M put together this season, there is an argument the Aggies deserved to be a higher seed. But with Texas securing No. 1 overall, there was a question posed about the matchup being too good for the Selection Committee to pass up on.

Head coach Trisha Ford commented on the idea, saying those thoughts will stay between her and the team. At the end of the day, winning games and trying to get to Oklahoma City is all that matters.

“We are happy that we are here,” Ford said. “We earned to be at Super Regionals. We’re not going to go into detail whether or not — that’s between us and the team. Our job is to come is to come out and win softball games this weekend.”

Texas and Texas A&M have met six times since the Aggies left for the SEC, all in the NCAA Tournament. However, regional play is as far in the NCAA Tournament as they have met. Never have the two rivals been matched up in a Super Regional.

Had Texas A&M been slated a little higher, maybe as the 15-seed, Oklahoma would have been on the other side for the Norman Super Regional. Move up to the 14-seed and an all-SEC Super Regional against Tennessee would have been in store. Not an easy task by any means.

To get to the Women’s College World Series, tough opponents are going to be in your way. Texas A&M just so happens to be across from the program’s biggest historical rival. Even so, the opponent is faceless heading into the weekend.

“It is what it is. At the end of the day, we’re going to have to beat somebody really good in order to win the Women’s College World Series and we know that. So, this weekend we have to beat Texas,” Ford said.

Texas A&M has not made the WCWS since 2017, hoping to break a six-year drought. Beating Texas en route would make the moment a whole lot sweeter for everybody wearing maroon in Austin this weekend.
