'A hero': Alan Shearer thinks 'stunning' player has saved Everton on so many occasions this season

Alan Shearer has been wowed by one Everton player who has been a “hero” during the 2023/24 season.

Sean Dyche’s men managed to secure their Premier League status thanks to a red-hot end to the campaign, which included five home wins on the bounce.

Shearer hasn’t been afraid to heap praise on Everton’s players throughout the season; Jarrad Branthwaite has caught the Newcastle United legend’s eye.

However, it wasn’t the Cumbrian-born defender who made Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Season.

Writing in his official Premier League column, Shearer has lauded Jordan Pickford’s influence at Goodison Park.

The former Newcastle United striker was impressed with how the Everton star pushed Arsenal’s David Raya all the way after registering 13 clean sheets.

He wrote: “Pushed David Raya all the way as he finished runner-up in the battle to win the Golden Glove, keeping 13 clean sheets.

“Ever-present in goal, Pickford was a hero on numerous occasions, making stunning saves to earn important points.”

Should Evertonians be concerned about Jordan Pickford’s future?

Pickford has, once again, been one of Everton’s standout performers. The former Sunderland man has made some huge saves at precisely the right time this season, with his display during the Merseyside Derby win over Liverpool arguably his most impressive.

However, could Pickford’s good form have alerted interested parties?

With 777 Partners’ protracted takeover falling into utter chaos, it’s believed the Toffees could be forced to sell some of their star players this summer.

Pickford, unsurprisingly, is one of the names to crop up. Chelsea have always been long-term admirers of England’s number one – and if Everton are forced to sell, Stamford Bridge could be a likely destination.

Evertonians will hope off-the-field issues are resolved quickly and that talk of the 30-year-old departing evaporates over the coming months.
