Qilins, Rabbits to Clash in Thai League Cup Final

Both Muangthong United and BG Pathum United are set to clash in the 2023/24 Thai League Cup final on June 16.

Muangthong triumphed over defending champions and arch-rivals Buriram United with a 2-0 victory at the BG Stadium, while BGPU narrowly defeated Port FC 2-1 at Ratchaburi's Dragon Solar Park in the semifinals on Wednesday night.

Kakana Kamyok found the net in the 53rd minute, and Jaroensak Wonggorn secured the second goal just two minutes before the end, propelling the Twin Qilins to their first final in seven years.

Ikhsan Fandi put the Glass Rabbits in the lead in the 41st minute, followed by Freddy Alvarez who doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute. Frans Putros reduced the deficit in the 75th minute, but Port couldn't equalize.

"We performed exceptionally well in this game. The players responded perfectly to my pre-match message that although we lost to them in the league, we wouldn't lose again," said BGPU coach Makoto Teguramori, as quoted from Bangkok Post, "We had to support each other to reach the final, and now we've accomplished that. This victory will boost the team's confidence significantly."

The final will be played on June 16, with the venue to be announced later by the Football Association of Thailand (FAT).

The League Cup champions will receive five million baht, while the runners-up will earn one million baht.
