'Knocking on the door': Pundit thinks Sunderland could well make move to sign Championship winger this summer

Sunderland have now been tipped to sign one ‘unstoppable’ winger this summer.

Sunderland look set to bolster their attack over the next few months, even if Jack Clarke stays at the club.

The 23-year-old netted 15 goals this term but proved to be the only player capable of consistently finding the net, with the Black Cats netting 16 goals less than last season.

Clarke does look likely to move to the Premier League though, leaving Sunderland with even less of an attacking threat.

The Wearside outfit will be desperate to bring in a new winger this summer and have already been linked with a number of options, with Liam Millar being one of them.

The Canadian joined Preston on loan from Basel last summer and has claimed five goals and five assists in the Championship.

It is believed that the Lilywhites would like to re-sign Millar, while the likes of Sunderland, Burnley and Sheffield United are also interested.

Well the Stadium of Light may not be particularly tempting given their underwhelming 2023/24 campaign, pundit Carlton Palmer believes Millar could well join Sunderland.

Sunderland are a ‘good bet’ to sign Liam Millar

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer said: “Preston North End are trying to pull out all the stops to keep the player at the football club, but the likes of Burnley, Sheffield United and Sunderland have joined the race for him.

“Preston were there or thereabouts this season, but Burnley and Sheffield United will be pushing for automatic promotion, while Sunderland will be knocking on the door.

“Who will be the best fit for him? Sheffield United under Chris Wilder could be a good fit for him, we already know Burnley have good wingers, and Sunderland could be a good bet depending on the manager that takes over.”

Why would he choose to move to Wearside?

Liam Millar is far from the level that Jack Clarke is at – making 72 successful dribbles this season compared to Clarke’s 148.

However, Sunderland do have to accept that they are going to really struggle to replace the attacker like-for-like.

They may well have had a chance if they had been fighting for promotion, but their recent situation both on and off the pitch may put off potential targets.

While Millar would likely pick up regular game-time on Wearside, it would be a surprise to see him pick Sunderland over Preston, where he has spent the last season.
