Pep Lijnders' move to RB Salzburg could help Liverpool win race to sign 'unbelievable' player - opinion

Liverpool have not only lost their long-serving manager, but many of Jurgen Klopp’s staff have also departed.

The German has been joined by the likes of his assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, along with goalkeeping coach John Achterberg and elite development coach Vitor Matos.

Fortunately, Reds number one Alisson has confirmed that Claudio Taffarel will stay on under Arne Slot next season, which means there will at least be some familiar faces among Liverpool’s coaching staff.

In more positive news for the Anfield faithful, they will be happy to see that two of their departing staff will reunite next season.

The much-loved Lijnders will take up the role of head coach at Red Bull Salzburg, with Matos set to become his assistant coach.

Pep Lijnders can help Liverpool snap up Benjamin Sesko

Back to Anfield, and Slot will soon be focusing on transfers, with the new boss undoubtedly needing to strengthen in various positions.

Given the Merseyside club’s issues going forward last season, the Dutchman could be tempted to sign a new forward.

Liverpool did manage 790 shots in the recent campaign, the third-most by a team on record, but it wasn’t enough to help clinch the title.

And one player that Slot could turn to in a bid to solve the issue is RB Leipzig and Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko.

According to BILD, the Reds are among the clubs interested in a move for the 20-year-old. And given the very fine margins in the modern game, any slight edge could help them in that pursuit.

That advantage could be gained by Lijnders’ new role at RB Salzburg, RB Leipzig’s sister club and indeed Sesko’s former side.

What can Benjamin Sesko bring to Liverpool?

The Austrian and German clubs clearly have a steady relationship, with the former having sold several star players to the latter over the years, including the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and former Red Naby Keita.

With Lijnders and indeed Matos now added to the mix, Sesko could join Szoboszlai and Keita in moving directly from Salzburg to Leipzig and then to Liverpool.

The young striker netted 29 goals for the Austrian club before his switch to Germany, where he has scored 18 goals.

The 20-year-old gained vital experience in the Champions League this season against the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City in the group stages, while he is already in double figures for goals on the international scene with Slovenia.

Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schroder is certainly a big fan of the youngster, saying after their Champions League clash with Real Madrid: “It’s unbelievable how much he ran, how he worked for the team and how many chances he had. The boy is unstoppable.”
