Kabosu: Dog made famous as an internet meme has died

Kabosu, a dog whose sceptical expression amused people all over the world and became an internet meme, has died.

Her owner, a Japanese kindergarten teacher, was unaware for a long time that her pet had become famous.

"Kabosu crossed the Rainbow Bridge on the morning of May 24," the owner of the beloved Japanese Shiba Inu dog breed wrote in an Instagram post on Friday. Kabosu fell asleep peacefully without suffering, she said.

The Rainbow Bridge refers to a place where pets are said to go upon their deaths to wait for their humans.

"Thank you all for loving Kabosu all these years. I'm sure Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world," she wrote.

Kabosu's owner adopted her from an animal shelter in 2008, the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported. "Since Kabosu came home to me, a number of wonderful things have happened," she told the newspaper.

Two years later, she said that she published a photo showing Kabosu with her front paws crossed and a "sceptical look."

It was only years later that she learnt from a friend that the picture had gone viral worldwide as a meme on the internet.

The digital currency Dogecoin even used Kabosu's image for its logo.

"Today Kabosu, our community's shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed in the arms of her person. The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable," wrote Dogecoin on X.

"We are all fortunate for [her spirit] to have touched and shaped ours," it added.

Kabuso lived to be around 18 years old, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported - that's about 90 years in human years.
