Singer 'almost died' while fighting rare neurological disorder - 'It's a struggle

Musical icon Celine Dion ‘almost died’ after she was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, in 2022.

The singer recently had to cancel her worldwide tour after being told she had the condition, which can include muscle stiffness and spasms. Celine Dion‘s life for the past two years is set to be revealed, as a new documentary about her health battle will air next month. The My Heart Will Go On hitmaker told The Today Show that she almost didn’t make it at one point while fighting the disorder for the past two years, but is doing ‘much better’ now.

The celebrity’s life will be released in all its vulnerabilities in the new documentary, I Am: Celine Dion, scheduled to release June 25th.

The 56-year-old has spent most of the past 24 months away from the limelight as she fought the disorder, including talking to the world’s best doctors, in an attempt to get back to who she was health wise.

For stiff person syndrome, a patient may also experience slurred speech, double vision and unsteady gait, with symptoms growing worse over time.

Hoda Kotb gave details ahead of her interview with the star, and said the icon ‘almost died’ during her health scare so far, but is ‘much better’ now. The TV host added, ‘it was a scary time’ for the All By Myself singer.

She told viewers: “She was diagnosed with a terrible disease, and at one point, she wondered if she was going to make it, whether she was going to live through it.

“A lot of people are wondering what happened [and] what was wrong.” Celine also told Hoda about how SPS affected her voice.

“We’ve missed her and it was a very emotional interview.

“We’ll see where she is on her journey of coming back, but I know people are cheering her on.”

Hoda’s interview with Celine is set to air on June 11.

Emotional trailer ‘wounds’ fans

Yesterday, Amazon Prime shared an emotional trailer for the upcoming doc, where Celine Dion is seen telling cameras ‘It’s been a struggle” after being diagnosed with stiff person syndrome.

She says she misses being on the stage, and touring as she used to do.

Aside from the Grammy Awards, where she presented an award to Taylor Swift, she’s disappeared from the limelight.

But she wanted to share her health battle about the rare condition with the world.

She previously said: “This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me, the journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, but not to let it define me.”

Last month, she told Vogue France she’ll ‘always’ have the disease.

“I hope that we’ll find a miracle, a way to cure it with scientific research, but for now I have to learn to live with it,” she said.

“At the beginning, I would ask myself: why me? How did this happen? What have I done? Is this my fault? Life doesn’t give you answers. You just have to live it. I have this illness for an unknown reason.”

But fans are feeling emotional after the first teaser for her documentary.

One wrote: “OMG that shot of her crying stabbed me and wounded me. All the best for you, Celine.”

A second added: “This is just the trailer, but I’m already crying like a baby”.

While a third echoed: “100% sure that I will cry watching this documentary.”
