Movie-maker who famously ate McDonald's for 30 days has died - 'World has lost a genius'

The death of documentary-maker Morgan Spurlock has been confirmed by his family. The movie star, known for the works of Super Size Me and Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden, passed away on Thursday.

Morgan Spurlock’s death comes 20 years after the Oscar-nominated documentary Super Size Me released. The film saw the celebrity document his life for 30 days, where he only consumed McDonald’s, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the social experiment, he put his health on the line, seeing a range of doctors and undergoing tests before, during and after the 30-day test. Spurlock put his own nutrition on the line to showcase what eating fast food regularly does to the body, as well as the impact on his mental health and those around him.

Morgan Spurlock’s death confirmed by his family

The star wanted to see what would happen and if he could completely depend on the food for the entire month. The documentary revealed how he gained 24.5 pounds, and how his BMI increased by 13% as well as his cholesterol.

The documentary-maker also recorded his mood swings, sexual dysfunction and how it was affecting his relationship and the increase of fat in his liver.

After living a typically healthy lifestyle before, he found it difficult and was told to stop my medical professionals, but persisted for the full 30 days between February 1 and March 2 in 2003.

The feature also made it big at the award shows, being nominated for Best Documentary Screenplay at the Writers Guild of America and Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards.

He released a sequel in 2017, called, Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!

His brother, Craig Spurlock, said after Morgan’s death: “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan. Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

It’s reported Morgan Spurlock’s death came after complications related to cancer.

Fans pay tribute

After hearing the news, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the Hollywood star, who passed away at 53.

One wrote: “Rest on Legend”, followed by someone else who said: “No way! Super Size Me was amazing! Sad”.

A third penned: “R.I.P. least he has left us with something good in the world and empowered the world to make better choices for themselves, even in a small way. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

A fourth wrote after hearing about Morgan Spurlock’s age at the time of his death: “This is crazy. RIP. This is too young to pass away. Prayers with his family”.

While a fifth reflected on his work: “He was a very good director, I hope there would be a director to take up his space.”
