White House blasts Republicans on loan forgiveness as hypocrites

It’s a sort of time-honored tradition at this point.

The White House’s X account continues to call out GOP lawmakers who criticize Joe Biden over forgiving loans to college graduates when those same officials had their loans forgiven by the government.

“Congressman Roger Williams had $1,445,978 in PPP loans forgiven.” The White House account posted along with the Texas congressman’s condemnation of Biden’s latest student forgiveness plan.

That was a reference to the Paycheck Protection Program and the loans that were doled out at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The program ended in 2021, but borrowers were able to have their debts wiped clean if they met certain criteria.

The U.S. Small Business Administration doesn’t comment on individual borrowers. But that hasn’t stopped the White House from shaming other Republican lawmakers who mirrored Williams’ criticism.

“Biden has cleared another $7.7 billion in student loans for 160,000 borrowers. He is doubling down on his attempt to sidestep Congress and SCOTUS to transfer enormous student loan debt onto hard-working Americans.” Williams wrote.

The White House account has been doing this for years.

“Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene had $183,504 in PPP loans forgiven.” It posted back in 2022 after Marjorie Taylor Greene lobbed similar criticism about student debt relief.
