Accused left-wing activist from Italy released from Hungarian prison

Italian left-wing activist Ilaria Salis, accused of assault in Hungary, has been released from prison after 15 months and placed under house arrest to be monitored by an electronic ankle tag, several Hungarian media outlets reported on Friday.

Salis had already travelled to the court hearing on Friday in Budapest on her own by taxi and had not been presented by prison officers as before.

Her family had paid the bail of 16 million forints ($45,210) set by the court 10 days earlier.

The Hungarian public prosecutor's office accuses the 39-year-old teacher from Milan and a German co-defendant of assaulting and injuring a group of right-wing extremists in Budapest in February 2023 together with other participants from the left-wing scene.

The Italian woman faces up to 11 years in prison, the German woman up to three and a half years. Both women deny the accusations.

Every year around February 11, a large number of Hungarian and foreign right-wing extremists gather in Budapest to commemorate a failed military operation by the German Waffen SS at the end of the World War II.

Salis describes herself as an anti-fascist. Last month, it was announced that she was to stand as a candidate for the Italian Alliance of Greens and Left in the European elections on June 9.

Salis has complained massively about the conditions in the Hungarian remand prison. At the start of the trial in January, she was brought before the court shackled hand and foot.
