Report: Liverpool target dubbed ‘extraordinary’ by Thierry Henry wants to leave his current club

Liverpool would be wise to strengthen in defence ahead of the new season, with their rivals having outclassed them in that area last time out.

It is an issue that incoming manager Arne Slot will need to look out for, with the Reds shipping 41 goals in the most recent campaign.

While it is not the worst record by any means, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal conceded just 29 times, with Pep Guardiola’s side conceding just 34.

One player who could be brought to Anfield to help solve the problem is Lille youngster Leny Yoro. The 18-year-old centre-back is being targeted by Liverpool, who along with Manchester City are leading the race for his signature, according to Le10Sport.

Leny Yoro wants to leave Lille

French giants PSG are also keeping tabs on the defender, who already has 60 Lille appearances to his name, but it is the Premier League duo who are in more advanced negotiations.

All three sides have now been handed a major boost in their transfer pursuit, with L’Equipe reporting that he wants to leave his current club.

The France youth international enjoyed a strong campaign in Ligue 1, as well as shining in the Europa Conference League.

While Liverpool, Manchester City and PSG have been impressed, the youngster has also caught the eye of Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who labelled Yoro as ‘extraordinary’.

Liverpool must be on red alert

The Reds must now be on alert regarding the young centre-back, whose contract at Lille expires next summer.

Losing out in the Premier League title race to Manchester City was bitterly disappointing for the Anfield faithful, but their misery would be furthered if the Manchester club were to beat them to the signature of one of Europe’s most exciting talents.

It may take some time for Slot and his staff to get up and running this summer, but perhaps a new defender will be among their top priorities, meaning a rapid move could be made for Yoro.

The France youth international helped Lille clinch one of the best defensive records in Ligue 1 this season, with the club joint-third for fewest goals conceded (34).

And individually, from his 32 league games, Yoro made 13 clean sheets, with an average of three clearances and 3.9 balls recovered per game, along with a very impressive 92% passing accuracy, as per Sofascore.
