Man Utd legend emerges as 'candidate' for one club immediately after landing new role in football

Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has been ‘approached’ by one club amid taking up a new role in football, according to stunning reports.

Wayne Rooney has been out of management since his ill-fated spell at Birmingham City ended in January with his sacking.

The 38-year-old Manchester United legend was dismissed after 83 days in charge at Birmingham City, who were relegated from the Championship this season.

Rooney had suffered nine defeats in his 15-match run at the soon-to-be League One side after he replaced John Eustace as Birmingham manager last October.

Following his exit from the St Andrew’s, the former United and England striker revealed his desire to return to football management in the foreseeable future.

During his time away from the dugout, Rooney has been actively taking part in punditry and appeared on BBC Sport for the FA Cup coverage.

The former Birmingham boss, who also took up punditry duties for TNT Sports and Sky Sports, has also become a new addition to The Overlap’s Stick to Football panel.

Man Utd legend Rooney lands new gig

Wayne Rooney was scheduled to appear on BBC’s flagship football show Match of the Day in April before he was forced to withdraw due to personal issues.

The former DC United and Derby County manager impressed during punditry for BBC during the Red Devils’ FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest in February.

According to The Guardian, Rooney is scheduled to return to BBC’s coverage this summer after being confirmed as a pundit for Euro 2024

The ex-United captain had been tipped to take a role as a BBC pundit for Euro 2024 due to his impressive playing career with the Three Lions on the international stage.

England are in Group C at the tournament in Germany and will play against Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia at Euro 2024.

Euro 2024 could also be the last major tournament for England boss Gareth Southgate, who is out of contract with the Three Lions in December.

Rooney becomes candidate for one club

It remains to be seen if Rooney will able to commit to his BBC punditry duties for Euro 2024 after being linked with a stunning return to management.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the former England captain has attracted interest from Championship side Plymouth Argyle.

Rooney previously managed in the Championship during the start of his managerial career with Derby County and later with Birmingham City.

According to The Telegraph, the footballer-turned-pundit has been ‘approached for an interview’ this week and is marked as a ‘candidate’ at Plymouth Argyle.

Plymouth are without a manager after Ian Foster was sacked in April after only three months in charge at the Championship club.
