S.C. man that tried to sell guns in N.J. sentenced to prison

A South Carolina man who attempted to sell guns and ammunition in New Jersey while also plotting a separate crime in the Garden State was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, U.S. District Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced Friday.

Torrell Brown, 49, of Orangeburg, South Carolina previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to unlawfully sell firearms, possession of firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon and conspiracy to traffic firearms.

“Mr. Brown made a terrible decision to get involved with this group of people because he needed to support his family,” Brown’s attorney Christopher D. Adams said Friday. “He accepted responsibility for his crime and certainly appreciates the consideration the court gave him because of his age and station in life.”

Between April and May 18, 2021, authorities said Brown attempted to sell guns and ammunition to at least one person in New Jersey and brought six firearms and ammunition from South Carolina to New Jersey.

Officials also accused Brown of conspiring to bring weapons to New Jersey during the same time period in connection with at least one other felony. Authorities didn’t elaborate on the nature of that alleged crime.

In addition to the prison term, Brown was sentenced to three years of supervised release.
