Downham Market woman in King’s Lynn court after crashing Renault Cleo into Peugeot in East Winch with drugs in her system

A Renault Clio driver who had drugs in her system while driving argued that they were not a contributing factor to her crashing into another car.

Paula Savage, 43, of Priory Road in Downham, appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where she admitted driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs and driving without due care or attention.

The court heard that, at 2pm on November 11, a two-vehicle crash occurred on Gayton Road in East Winch between a white Renault Clio and a Peugeot.

The driver of the Peugeot reported that Savage, who was driving the Renault Clio, came partly onto their side of the road.

The Peugeot driver tried to move to avoid a collision but was unable to do so.

Prosecutor Abdul Khan said that shortly after emergency services arrived at the scene, a roadside drugs test was carried out on Savage.

It came back with a positive reading for cocaine and she was arrested.

In mitigation, George Sorrell said that Savage had taken cocaine days before the accident, but said she did not feel it was a contributing factor to the crash.

“She started to turn left when the sun blinded her,” said Mr Sorrell.

“She went over too far towards the carriageway and clipped the other car.

“This is a lady who has had a lot of problems in her life, friendships, relationships and mental health problems. She wasn’t able to do anything herself but has received help and her life has been transformed.”

Savage was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined £120.

She will also pay a victim surcharge of £48 and court costs of £40.
