Tom Huddlestone leaves Manchester United

Tom Huddlestone posted a message on Instagram to confirm he had undertaken his final day as Manchester United staff.

Huddlestone was appointed two years ago, and described his spell at Manchester United as a ‘privilege’.

He added that he would ‘highly recommend’ a ‘playing coach’ role to other professionals coming close to retirement.

Huddlestone did not confirm his next move but is expected to now transition full time into coaching and formally retire from playing duties.

He wrote: “Today marks my final day at this incredible football club. Over the past two seasons, I have experienced remarkable growth and invaluable learning, both on and off the pitch.

“Every day, I have had the privilege of learning from amazing people, gaining insights into all aspects of player development and well-being. Entering an office environment for the first time was daunting, but from day one, I was made to feel welcome and at ease.

“I am and will remain forever grateful for the smooth transition. For any senior professionals considering
a coaching career, I highly recommend taking on a “playing coach” role for a season or two at the end of your playing career.

“This experience has been eye-opening, revealing the dedication involved in planning, executing, and
analysing every training session, as well as meticulously preparing for the games schedule. These efforts are often taken for granted as a player, so witnessing and participating in this side of the game has been truly remarkable.

“I wish the club every success in the future. Special thanks to everyone in the academy, both players and staff, especially Trav, Demps, Nick, and Macca, for affording me this incredible opportunity. Best of luck in the future.”

Manchester United could hire another playing coach

Tom Huddlestone’s role was to coach the under-21s, and occasionally play in matches, to pass his experience on while on the pitch.

He even popped up on the scoresheet too, netting once this past season from nine appearances.

The former England international could be replaced, he is the second playing coach the club has had, following former academy defender Paul McShane.

Huddlestone’s time at the club was appreciated, with former academy midfielder Charlie Savage responding: “All the best Tom thanks for all the help whilst I was there.”
