Aston Villa offer contract to re-sign ‘machine’ who Dean Smith loaned in 2020

Aston Villa are closing in on making signing number one for the summer, and it looks likely to come in the form of a player who’s already been at the club.

After a superb campaign at the helm of the Villians, Unai Emery will be looking to add to his squad ahead of Champions League football next season.

Despite the strength the club have, there is work to be done with the depth in particular requiring attention from the higher-ups at Aston Villa and now it looks like Monchi has already offered a contract.

As the transfer window heats up with the season over, quick developments can be expected and now one journalist has suggested that signing number one is moving along nicely.

Aston Villa set to offer Ross Barkley a three-year contract

As the race to sign relegated Luton Town’s main man Ross Barkley continues, Villa are without a doubt in the driver’s seat to make a deal.

Now, as reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Barkley has actually been offered a contract by the Champions League new boys which is said to be a three-year deal.

After the season that Barkley has had under Rob Edwards at Kenilworth, it’s little surprise to see teams clamouring over him as a free agent this summer.

Barkley was on a contract worth £30k-a-week at Luton and this is a figure we imagine will be multiplied by his next club, which looks increasingly likely to be Villa.

As a midfield option, Barkley would be excellent in the squad and provide real competition for the likes of Douglas Luiz, Youri Tielemans and John McGinn while offering superb technical ability.

Of course, it won’t be Barkley’s first spell at Villa Park, and so Emery has a chance to right a wrong as he’s since shown he should’ve been kept as Cesc Fabregas has lauded him since, labelling him a “machine”.

How did Barkley fare during his first spell at Villa?

Back during the 2020-21 season, Barkley spent the season at Villa on loan and in doing so made 24 appearances for the club in a year of Covid football.

In this time, Barkley scored three goals and assisted one which was impressive at the time as it wasn’t the Villa we know today.

At the age of 30, Barkley will go down as a player who failed to live up to his potential, considering he was a Wayne Rooney-level talent upon his breakthrough.

But he’s coming into his own at the end of his career and it’s great to see. Hopefully, it’ll be Villa who reap the rewards of his career resurgence over the next couple of years.
