Summer basketball is set to begin in just over a week with the calendar turning to June, and Georgia’s roster looks a lot different than it did last year.

The Bulldogs have seen 10 of their 13 scholarship players from 2023-24 come and go. Some are at new places across the college basketball landscape. Others have graduated and moved on. Then there’s the newcomers to Athens – five transfers and two recruits in the Class of 2024. There’s still some work to be done, but at this point, here’s how things look and where Georgia’s players have landed…

Graduation (3)

RJ Sunahara
Russel Tchewa
Noah Thomasson

Outgoing Transfers (7)

Jabri Abdur-Rahim (Providence)
Frank Anselem-Ibe (Louisville)
Jalen DeLoach (Loyala Chicago)
Justin Hill (Wichita State)
Mari Jordan (Tulane)
Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe (Seattle)
RJ Melendez (Mississippi State)

Incoming Transfers (5)

Justin Abson (Appalachian State)
RJ Godfrey (Clemson)
Tyrin Lawrence (Vanderbilt)
Dakota Leffew (Mount St. Mary’s)
De’Shayne Montgomery (Mount St. Mary’s)

Class of 2024 Signees (2)

Somto Cyril – Overtime Elite – Four-Star (No. 45 national, No. 8 center)
Asa Newell – Montverde Academy – Five-Star Plus+ (No. 12 national, No. 2 power forward)

To go along with top-10 classes coming from both the high school (No. 9) and transfer portal rankings (No. 6), Georgia also returns three players from its 2023-24 team: Blue Cain, Silas Demary and Dylan James. Each freshmen this past season, Cain, Demary and James were all three starting at season’s end. The Bulldogs will look to build on its strong finish to the 2023-24 campaign, winning 20 games for the first time in eight seasons and making the postseason for the first time since 2017. The Bulldogs not only made an appearance, but they won and made a run to the semifinals of the NIT – taking down Xavier (Big East), Wake Forest (ACC) and Ohio State (Big Ten) in the process.

*** UGA filled out its basketball staff on Friday with the addition of Anthony Goins from Boston College, where he’s been the last three seasons. His 11 years of coaching has been spent majority in the Northeast with time on staffs at Quinnipiac (2017-19), Yale (2014-17) and Dartmouth (2013-14) as well as Clemson (2019-21). Replacing Akeem Miskdeen (who left Georgia for Dusty May’s initial staff at Michigan), Goins is expected to spend his time working with the backcourt.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Georgia Basketball,” Goins shared in a statement on Friday. “Coach White and his staff have done an unbelievable job building the Georgia program the past two years. I could feel the energy and momentum the moment I got on campus. I’m extremely appreciative of Coach White for giving me the opportunity. Coach Grant, the staff and everyone around Boston College have been unbelievable the past three years, but I can’t wait to get to work in Athens!”

*** The SEC announced opponents for the upcoming 2024-25 season, adding to the growing list of games Georgia has on the docket. Set to play Big East opponents Marquette and St. John’s in the non-conference slate along with Georgia Tech and a matchup in the ACC-SEC Challenge, the Bulldogs will take on Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Playing Auburn, Florida and South Carolina twice, Georgia will also hit the road for games against Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M – plus the double-dipped rivals.

*** Mike White, while speaking to the University of Georgia Athletic Association (UGAA) Board of Directors, said that Georgia has locked down at least one more player for the coming year’s team, and an announcement should come officially soon. According to White, it’s the last scholarship spot Georgia plans to fill for 2024-25 with three publicly open at the time of publishing.
