Manchester United have just made next season worse for Newcastle

Newcastle United’s season is finally over.

With the post-season tour of Australia now wrapped up, attention will now turn to what happens next for Eddie Howe and Newcastle.

Indeed, the club are reportedly ready to sign both Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly of Fulham and Bournemouth respectively after positive talks with the defensive pair.

The signing of a right winger is also said to be a priority, as well as a new striker ahead of Callum Wilson’s likely departure.

England internationals Jarrod Bowen and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are both thought to be of interest on that front.

Still, Manchester United now have made plans for next season more difficult.

While Newcastle’s 4-2 win over Brentford on the final day of the Premier League season ensured Howe’s side finished above the Red Devils for the first time since 1977, the Manchester giants have enacted some revenge.

By beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley, Man United are now bound for European football.

They have entered the Europa League by way of lifting the cup at England’s national stadium, which in turn forces Chelsea down into the Conference League.

As a result, Newcastle will not be playing in Europe, with the club relying on a City win in order to reach the Conference League.

Howe will not be able to offer new signings the chance to play European football and it remains to be seen how much of an impact that will have.

Eddie Howe has just been handed a huge trophy blow at Newcastle

Clearly, qualifying for the Conference League would not have been the target before a ball was kicked this season.

However, having come so close to it, missing out on the very last hurdle is obviously hugely disappointing.

Given Newcastle’s long trophy drought, it seemed like a very winnable competition and a chance for Howe and his squad to write themselves into the history books at St James’ Park.

Ah well, focusing on the Premier League it is…
