Rangers v Celtic player ratings: 2/10 gifts game, 8/10 trio deserved better

Rangers were looking to end the season on a high facing Celtic in the Scottish Cup final which saw Philippe Clement hoping to enjoy success at Hampden for a second time.

The manager has a squad that is hanging together, but after not winning an Old Firm derby all season, the players had a point to prove and the game plan was cleary to contain.

Here are your Rangers player ratings for the encounter at Hampden as once again, a mistake cost Philippe Clement.

Rangers player ratings v Celtic

Philippe Clement will be hoping that next season doesn’t have the same injury problems and it could be the last time that some of these players are seen in a Rangers shirt and that these tactics are deployed:

Jack Butland – 2

Was kept relatively quiet by his centre-halves in the first half with most of the danger coming from blocked passes rebounding to Celtic players.

Gifted Celtic the winner with the one save he had to make, not his finest hour.

James Tavernier – 2

Gave the ball away in attack and got beaten positionally or one-v-one almost every time Daizen Maeda got the ball.

A shocker from the captain.

Ridvan Yilmaz – 3

Not much better than Tavernier and could tell that he was nowhere near fit.

Ben Davies – 8

Very impressive first half, dealt with every loose ball and Kyogo’s movement. Composed in possession.

Barely put a foot wrong.

Leon Balogun – 8

Covered Tavernier on a few occasions and broke into midfield to break Celtic’s press, like Davies, did very little wrong and was solid.

Nicolas Raskin – 5

Playing deeper than normal and provided an energy that has been missing in midfield recently.

Only mistake was not fouling Bernardo properly in the build up to the goal.

Todd Cantwell – 5

Got into some good positions but his final ball wasn’t quite what it usually is.

Work rate and determination to get Rangers up the pitch couldn’t be faulted.

Mohamed Diomande – 8

Much better.

Outstanding in the first half as he looked to put out fires and link the midfield, much more like a £4.3m player.

Was let down by those in the final third, one of his best all-round performances.

Fabio Silva – 5

Didn’t get enough ball because every time he did get it he was giving Alistair Johnston a torrid time.

Cyriel Dessers – 3

Didn’t hold the ball up anywhere near to the standard needed and injury saw him replaced at half-time.

Dujon Sterling – 6

As with Silva, didn’t get one-v-one with Greg Taylor often enough because it was a mismatch physically.

Substitutes

Abdallah Sima – 4

Came on for Dessers at half-time and was unlucky to see his goal chalked off, Joe Hart was never getting the ball.

Scott Wright – 2

Lost easy possession in the build up to the goal, gave the ball away every time he had it.

Not good enough.

Ross McCausland – 3

The game needed a match winner, not a winger playing it safe.

Offered nothing.

John Lundstram – 2

Not on long and was lucky not to get booked with exactly the same sort of challenge he got sent off for at Parkhead.

Rabbi Matondo – 4

Summed up his season – nearly, but not good enough.
