Euro giants now make £17m decision which could give Arsenal boost over transfer target

Arsenal will sign a goalkeeper if Aaron Ramsdale leaves in the summer transfer window, and may have been handed a boost over one target.

The Gunners were recently linked with a sensational move for former goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who is currently at Juventus.

Szczesny came through the ranks at Arsenal, but was sold after a fallout with Arsene Wenger, and he has since become one of Europe’s finest keepers as he replaced the legendary Gianluigi Buffon as the Juventus number one.

A return to the Emirates was mooted, as Szczesny has one year left on his contract, and counts as a homegrown option for Arsenal, but the links died down as it appeared that he would remain as the Juventus number one. However, this may have now changed.

Juventus sign new goalkeeper amid Wojeich Szczesny Arsenal return rumours

Juventus have sacked manager Max Allegri in favour of hiring Thiago Motta, and Motta’s first move has been to sign a new goalkeeper.

Monza stopper Michele Di Gregorio is set to confirm a £17m move to Juventus, and this could mean that Szczesny now departs if he loses his spot.

Nothing has been confirmed yet over whether Di Gregorio will come in to replace the Poland star immediately. He could even copy what Szczesny did when he first joined Juventus: serve as the understudy for a season whilst settling in, before taking over as first-choice.

With Szczesny set to be a free agent next summer, if his exit is not brought forward, he could still become an option for Arsenal if a goalkeeper is still needed.

Why Arsenal want Wojciech Szczesny back

Ramsdale looks set to leave after losing his place to David Raya, and Szczesny could be the ideal backup to replace him.

The 34-year-old is still performing at a high level, and would bring a wealth of experience to Arteta’s side in the dressing room.

There is a feeling of unfinished business when it comes to Szczesny’s time at Arsenal. He was a figure who connected with the fans as one himself, having played in the academy after initially joining as a youngster.

Szczesny won the Golden Glove in 2013-14, but a fallout with Wenger after a defeat to Southampton in January 2015 meant he was dropped and eventually sold, in what was arguably one of the Frenchman’s biggest mistakes in his final few years.

The Poland star would provide experienced backup for Raya, would fill the homegrown quota, and would allow him to return to the club where he developed, if he is open to a move without being the first choice.
