The midfielder completed the full 90 minutes in the final, which saw Erik ten Hag’s side beat the Premier League champions 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.

After the game, the Portuguese international managed to find himself in front of a camera and ended up sharing his thoughts on the Citizens, who became the first side to win four Premier League titles last weekend.

Speaking to ITV (via BBC Sport) after the game, Fernandes had this to say about City.

He said: “It was the last chance to get something positive from the season. We were here last season and we weren’t good enough and we had to see them go up and get the trophy.

“They have great quality, great players, a great manager. We had to sacrifice and suffer but we did great things. I try my best to help the team.”

Man City vs Man United – the stats

Pep Guardiola’s side ended the game with 74% possession and more shots on goal than the Red Devils (19 vs 11).

However, United had more shots on target than the Blues (5 vs 4).

In terms of their overall team performances, City just edged their rivals with a rating of 6.95/10 from SofaScore compared to United’s rating of 6.92/10.

Taking into account how City beat United on both occasions in the recent Premier League campaign and ended the season 31 points ahead of them, it’s easy to see why Fernandes has said that the Blues are a great team with great players and a great manager.

However, this defeat will have ended the season on a disappointing note despite their historic title win.
