'Top five': Pep Guardiola says Man United have a player who is one of the best in world football

Pep Guardiola has admitted that Manchester United have a player who is one of the ‘top five’ in the world.

Man United defeated City 2-1 in the FA Cup final yesterday, with teenage duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo on the scoresheet.

The Red Devils have also qualified for the Europa League, knocking Chelsea down to the UEFA Conference League.

It was a controlled display by Erik ten Hag’s side and one man particularly impressed Guardiola.

Pep Guardiola hails Lisandro Martinez

Speaking after the Wembley defeat, Guardiola heaped praise on Lisandro Martinez for his performance.

“Lisandro Martínez is top five centre-backs in the world. He made the difference on this game by playing passes through our defence,” the City boss admitted.

Martinez has endured a tough season with injuries and it was only his 12th start of the campaign, which evidences how hard United have been hit by key absences.

The 16-cap Argentina international partnered with Raphael Varane at the back and the pairing looked so assured.

If only ten Hag has the two at his dispense all year.

Lisandro Martinez statistics vs Manchester City

Martinez’s statistics against City only amplify Guardiola’s claim. Here they are, as per Sofascore.

  • 73 minutes
  • 5 clearances
  • 2/3 duels won
  • 1 interception
  • 90% accurate passes

Guardiola was particularly impressed with his passing and considering he averaged a 90 per cent pass completion rate, it’s easy to see why.

With Varane set to leave on a free transfer this summer, club chiefs will need to dip into the transfer market for a new partner to play alongside the 26-year-old.
