‘Ran a mile’: Alan Nixon explains what really put Sunderland off trying to hire Danny Rohl as new manager

A journalist has explained what really put Sunderland off from trying to hire Danny Rohl.

Sunderland remain without a manager after three months of being on the hunt.

The Black Cats had been heavily linked with Will Still since before Christmas, but recent reports have claimed they are now ‘increasingly unlikely’ to sign their first choice target.

Their pursuit of managers elsewhere has rapidly crumbled too, with Bo Svensson joining Union Berlin and Rene Maric joining Vincent Kompany’s coaching staff at Bayern Munich.

Danny Rohl was another name they had seemingly been interested in for months now, but the clubsuffered a huge blow when it was confirmed he had signed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday.

It had felt like the German was one of Sunderland’s main targets after Michael Beale’s sacking, however Rohl went onto admit that he had never even considered leaving Hillsborough.

Sunderland quickly lost interest in Danny Rohl

Now it looks like the Black Cats weren’t really that interested either, with Alan Nixon explaining that they ‘ran a mile’ when learning one factor early on.

When asked about Sunderland’s pursuit of Rohl on X, Nixon wrote: “They checked compo and ran a mile.”

It was reported earlier this month that any club wanting to appoint Rohl would have to pay Wednesday a £5 million compensation fee, while it would rise to a whopping £10m if they wanted his coaching staff too.

The 35-year-old continued to attract interest, but Nixon has now claimed that it was the hefty fee that had already put Sunderland off.

Where does Sunderland’s search go now?

While the search of a new manager is proving extremely frustrating, it would have definitely raised questions if Sunderland had spent eight figures on Rohl and his team to the Stadium of Light.

That doesn’t make the situation any less baffling though, with the club’s options very quickly running short.

While Sunderland don’t seem to have much luck with managers, the fans still really have to rely on some positive news about Will Still.

If the 31-year-old doesn’t move to Wearside, then the fans are going to fall even further behind the board and it could well be another difficult campaign to witness.
