Two-Time PGA Tour Winner Grayson Murray Dead at 30

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray, 30, died Saturday, a day after he dropped out of the Charles Schwab Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, due to illness.

No details were released about the death.

Murray, of Raleigh, North Carolina, withdrew from the tournament in Texas with two holes left to play in the second round on Friday.

"We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words," PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement Saturday.
"The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones," he added.

Monahan said Murray's family asked that the tour competition continue. "They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes," he added. Grief counselors are being provided at tour events.

Murray's management company, GSE Worldwide, was awaiting further details about the death.

"Our heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time," GSE said in a statement.

Murray's friend and 2012 US Open winner Webb Simpson told reporters Saturday that Murray's "mom was with him during the Wells Fargo Championship and I think they were hanging out together, and I loved those two days we got together. So I'm super thankful for getting some good time with him before the bad news of today."

Murray was a standout golfer from his youth. He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships (2006-08) and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group.

He had recently won his second PGA TOUR title at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii,
