Glen Powell ‘puked’ after watching Hidden Figures rough cut because he thought he’d ‘ruined’ the movie

In a candid revelation on the recent episode of the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast (watch below), Glen Powell shared his initial reaction to watching a rough cut of the 2016 hit movie Hidden Figures. Portraying astronaut John Glenn in the Oscar-nominated film, Powell recalled a moment of intense self-doubt and concern.

The historical drama, led by powerhouse performances from Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, and Janelle Monáe, showcases the untold story of three African-American women who played pivotal roles in launching Glenn into space, making him the first American to orbit the Earth.

Powell admitted he found it challenging to watch the early version of the film. “It does get in your own head,” he explained. “People forget that when you’re watching a rough cut of a movie, it’s probably like watching the footage of yourself that you’re having to edit. So you sit there and you’re like, ‘I hate myself.’”

He recalled his first viewing of Hidden Figures on the Fox lot, prior to the completion of visual effects, music, and sound design. “I remember watching it for the first time and I literally left the movie and puked in the bushes,” Powell confessed.

His anxiety stemmed from a fear of disappointing his co-stars and tarnishing the legacy of the real-life heroes depicted in the film. “I thought I ruined this movie,” he said. “All these women put in these great performances and I was like, ‘I literally ruined this movie.’ It feels like the most atrocious thing you can do as an actor is just be terrible in a movie about real-life people that need a real-life story.”

However, Powell noted that his perspective shifted as the film underwent its final touches. “But once the music gets in there, it starts being polished a little bit,” he acknowledged. “We all want to be good… and nobody wants to be the weak point in a movie, especially when you’re talking about real-life stories.”

Fans of Powell can catch him in his latest venture, the action-comedy film Hit Man, currently playing in cinemas. Don't miss its streaming debut on Netflix starting June 7.
