At Least 27 Killed in Massive Amusement Park Fire

At least 27 people, including several children, died in a horrific fire at an amusement park in India.

Some of the victims were burned beyond recognition, authorities told some relatives.

The massive fire broke out Saturday at an amusement park in the city of Rajkot. The two-story building where the park was located included areas for bowling, go-carting and a trampoline.

Panicked visitors quickly fled the blaze but were slowed by narrow gates at the entrance, the Associated Press reported.

"Extremely distressed by the fire mishap in Rajkot," Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X. "My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. Prayers for the injured. The local administration is working to provide all possible assistance to those affected."

The owner and manager of the amusement center are among the six persons booked in connection with the deadly fire as an investigation continues, the Indian Express reported.

The cause of the fire was under investigation but was possibly linked to a welding machine that was being used for ongoing construction work at the site.

Deadly fires are common in India. Six newborns also died this weekend at a pediatric hospital.

The BBC reported that the hospital owner was arrested as an investigation continues as well into that fire.
