Tokyo stocks opened slightly higher Monday as technology issues tracked advances by their U.S. counterparts late last week.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 63.53 points, or 0.16 percent, from Friday to 38,709.64. The broader Topix index was up 4.89 points, or 0.18 percent, at 2,747.43.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by marine transportation, electric power and gas, and insurance issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 156.86-87 yen compared with 156.91-157.01 yen in New York and 157.04-06 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0845-0849 and 170.10-20 yen against $1.0841-0851 and 170.18-28 yen in New York and $1.0824-0825 and 169.99-170.03 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
