Survey: Majority of Germans against recognizing Palestinian statehood

The majority of Germans are against recognizing Palestine as an independent state, according to a Forsa survey published in the magazine Stern on Monday.

The survey states that 50% of Germans oppose recognition, 38% support it and 12% are unsure.

Last week, Spain, along with Norway and Ireland, announced that they would recognize Palestine as an independent state, enraging Israel.

The majority of United Nations member states recognize the state of Palestine.

However, influential Western nations such as the United States, Britain, and most EU states do not recognize an independent Palestinian state.

While affirming its support for a two-state solution in principle, the German government is currently opposed to implementing the move.

The survey, conducted from May 22 to 23 with phone interviews, involved 1,004 people. The margin of error is a maximum of plus or minus 3%.
