£34m Arsenal flop's future now 'depends' on one factor amid rumoured Arteta concerns

Arsenal are set to sell several fringe players in the summer as Mikel Arteta wants to strengthen his bench, but there are some difficult decisions to make.

The first-choice Arsenal XI went toe to toe with Manchester City until the final day, but it is perhaps a lack of depth and rotation over the course of the season that proved to be the difference.

Arteta has been criticised for failing to give some of the players on his bench more chances, whilst Bukayo Saka is one of several players in risk of burnout from playing in the vast majority of games.

Fan favourite Emile Smith Rowe could be one of the players heading for the exit door, having started just three league games in two seasons, but Arteta has a decision to make over whether to sell him or Fabio Vieira, who has started just five league games in two years since he was signed from Porto for £34m.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Arsenal stance over Fabio Vieira future

It now appears that if the opportunity arises to make some money back on Vieira, then Arsenal may take it, as revealed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in his Daily Briefing.

“It’s also been reported that Fabio Vieira could leave Arsenal after a lack of playing time. My understanding, however, is that it depends on proposals,” he explained.

“So far it’s quiet but for players like Vieira (not all of them) there’s a chance to leave in case of a good proposal coming in.”

It was reported that Vieira’s performances in training played a part in his lack of game time since returning from injury in recent months, but the circumstances of the title race, as well as his lack of match-sharpness, also contributed to his lack of minutes.

Vieira has shown flashes of his best talent at times, and if he can stay fit and find a consistent run of form, he could prove to be a huge asset for Arteta.

The 23-year-old started the season superbly with assists against Fulham and Manchester United, but he required surgery in November which kept him out for months, and he has hardly featured since returning to the squad in February.

With three years remaining on his deal, another quiet campaign would see his value massively drop, and if a significant offer comes in now, then it should be considered. However, if Arsenal do not receive an offer close to what they paid for him, there is merit in keeping the midfielder to see if he can finally deliver next season.

Vieira looked sharp in a cameo appearance against Chelsea recently, and a full pre-season this summer could help him develop some form and confidence going into the campaign.
